Tarik Mendes (b. 1992) is a Brazilian multidisciplinary artist and the founder of TelaModa and TelaModaPrints, two interconnected creative projects bringing contemporary art into fashion, design, stationery, and everyday life.
Based in New York City, Mendes works across painting, sculpture, mixed media, design, and layered net and screen-based constructions. His artistic practice investigates materiality, transparency, spatial perception, and the relationship between painting, sculpture, and architectural space.
Mendes founded TelaModa as an extension of his artistic practice and his interest in bringing original artwork beyond traditional gallery spaces. Through TelaModa, art becomes wearable, appearing across one-of-a-kind hand-painted clothing, handbags, accessories, and artist-designed objects.
Following the development of TelaModa, Mendes expanded the concept through TelaModaPrints, an art-inspired stationery and design line created to make original artistic imagery more accessible while also providing a platform for artists and creative expression.
TelaModaPrints combines art-inspired imagery with contemporary design, color, and smart, witty messages across stationery and related products. The project reflects the same commitment to creativity and distinctive visual identity that shaped TelaModa while introducing artwork into objects that can become part of everyday life.
As Founder, Creative Director, and one of the artists behind TelaModa and TelaModaPrints, Mendes has helped shape the artistic identity, creative direction, visual language, and development of both projects while contributing his own original artwork and designs.
Together, TelaModa and TelaModaPrints reflect Mendes’s broader belief that contemporary art does not have to remain confined to galleries, museums, or traditional formats. Art can be worn, carried, shared, collected, given, and incorporated into daily life.
Artistic Practice
Mendes’s studio practice examines the relationship between painting, sculpture, and spatial construction through works that challenge the fixed condition of the image plane.
Using layered net and screen-based materials as both support and subject, he constructs permeable surfaces in which image, structure, and material become inseparable. Repeated layers of translucent netting and mixed media create physical depth, allowing fragments of imagery to emerge, recede, and dissolve as light, shadow, movement, and the viewer’s position change.
This visual vocabulary extends into sculpture, where the same net-based structures expand into three-dimensional form. Across the practice, the net functions simultaneously as framework, membrane, and connective tissue, linking painting and sculpture through a shared spatial language.
Through accumulation, repetition, transparency, and controlled tension, Mendes creates works that exist between construction and erosion, density and openness, presence and disappearance.
His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections across multiple countries.
